Teraco Data Environments Ltd. is seeking to expand its operations through an 8 billion rand ($442 million) loan, which is being syndicated by Absa Group Ltd. This expansion is driven by increasing demands from artificial intelligence applications in Africa.

According to Chief Financial Officer Samuel Erwin, the new facility will increase Teraco’s total capacity to 228 megawatts, reinforcing its position as Africa’s leading data-center company. The facility is being designed with modern hyperscaler specifications, including liquid cooling capabilities specifically to support AI deployments. Erwin noted in an interview that they anticipate growing demand for power- and heat-intensive AI equipment.
The financing initiative, spearheaded by Absa, has attracted participation from several major South African asset managers. This follows Teraco’s previous fundraising effort in 2023, where they secured 11.8 billion rand for debt refinancing and facility development. The ongoing facility project is scheduled to become operational in the first quarter of 2025.
Africa represents a significant growth opportunity in the data center market, driven by its rapidly expanding, youthful, and increasingly tech-savvy population that relies on internet services for various needs, from banking to entertainment. Despite this potential, Africa currently houses less than 2% of global data center capacity, with most of it concentrated in South Africa. According to investment bank Dai Magister, the African market could expand to $7 billion within the next three years, presenting substantial opportunities for companies that can establish a strong market presence.
Teraco, which was acquired by Digital Realty Trust Inc. in 2022 in a deal valued at $3.5 billion, maintains its leadership position as Africa’s largest data-center operator. However, the market is becoming more competitive with new entrants like Equinix and Amazon Web Services expanding their African operations. Additionally, Microsoft has revealed plans to construct a 1 gigawatt facility in Kenya in partnership with G42, a leading UAE-based artificial intelligence company.
