Novacap Investments Inc., a private equity heavyweight from Brossard, Quebec, just closed a $1 billion fund to supercharge digital infrastructure—think faster, stronger, smarter tech. It took two years of hustle and charm to lock in the cash, navigating a choppy sea of rising interest rates and sluggish acquisitions. But Chief Executive Pascal Tremblay is all smiles. “Yes, it was long. Yes, it was hard. But we crushed it,” he said, reveling in their overachievement on an initial $750 million target.

Novacap didn’t wait to flex its new financial muscles. The firm has already invested in four U.S. businesses, including H5 Data Centers LLC and All West Communications Inc., an internet provider bringing broadband bliss to the heartlands of Utah and Wyoming. While the names of their big-ticket backers remain under wraps, the fund has wooed a global mix of institutional players, family offices, and high-net-worth jet-setters from North America to the Middle East.
What’s the driving force behind this digital love affair? Two letters: AI. “Ten years ago, the buzzword was ‘cloud,’” said Ted Mocarski, a Novacap bigwig. “Now, it’s AI. And with AI, you need power, storage, and lightning-fast connectivity.” The firm, known for investments in tech but no stranger to sectors like financial services and consumer goods, is betting big on this AI-fueled demand.
While private equity players struggle to get investors to crack open their wallets—only C$2.25 billion was raised in Canada’s private equity market last year, the lowest since 2018—Novacap is thriving. Alex Russ of Evercore Inc., who advised Novacap, described demand for the fund as strong, even in a cutthroat environment.
Despite the billion-dollar milestone, Tremblay isn’t sugarcoating the broader outlook. “2025 won’t be a boom year for private equity,” he predicted. With funds raised during the heady days of 2020-2021 itching to be deployed, he expects an unpredictable year. But if Novacap’s track record with successes like payment processor Nuvei Corp. is anything to go by, it’s ready to navigate the quirks and chaos ahead. In the ever-evolving world of digital infrastructure, Novacap is proving it’s not just riding the AI wave—it’s surfing it in style.
