Nancy Gathungu is the Auditor-General of the Republic of Kenya, responsible for auditing all government institutions and reporting on the management and use of public funds. Since assuming office in 2020, she has played a critical role in strengthening fiscal accountability and transparency within Kenya’s public sector. Through detailed audit reports, she has flagged billions of shillings in irregular expenditures across national and county institutions, reinforcing the importance of oversight in safeguarding public resources. A career auditor with over three decades of experience in the Office of the Auditor-General, she also serves as Chair of the African Organisation of English-speaking Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E). Her work underscores that strong financial systems depend not only on how money is generated, but also on how responsibly it is monitored and protected.
