The African Development Bank Group has unveiled a new digital platform called the Gender Marker System Dashboard to track the progress of gender equality mainstreaming in its projects across Africa.
This online tool is an extension of the Bank’s existing Gender Marker System, which categorizes projects based on their impact on gender equality and women’s empowerment. The Gender Marker System uses four classifications: GEN I for projects primarily focused on gender equality; GEN II for projects with gender equality as a significant outcome; GEN III for projects

with some gender-related outputs; and GEN IV for projects with minimal gender-related activities.
The new Dashboard presents gender data organized by various factors including sector, region, country, year, and funding source, while also highlighting areas that require additional resources to meet or exceed gender targets.Bank staff and consultants can utilize this tool to access gender-related data for developing various reports and project supervision. Dr. Martha Phiri, Acting Director for Gender, Women and Civil Society, emphasized that the Dashboard is the latest innovation in the Bank’s investment in Africa’s women to drive inclusive growth, aligning with its Ten-Year Strategy 2024-2033.
The Dashboard is integrated with the Bank’s SAP corporate project management system and provides a basis for monitoring the implementation of Gender Action Plans in Bank operations. It automates data entry, replacing the previous manual process, and can be accessed via SAP or the Bank’s intranet site. The Gender and Women Empowerment Division will update the Dashboard data monthly, allowing staff to understand the impact of their work on advancing gender equality and make improved strategic use of Bank gender resources.
This initiative supports the Bank’s goal of ensuring that at least 80% of public-sector operations and 50% of private-sector operations directly benefit women and girls.By introducing this tool, the African Development Bank reinforces its commitment to gender as a priority cross-cutting theme in driving Africa’s transformation, as outlined in its Ten-Year Strategy for 2024-2033.
