The Kenyan government is cracking down on dodgy phones with a new “Telecom Equipment Distributor” license. Think of it as a fancy permit for companies selling phones and other gadgets. Want to play in this game? It’ll cost you a cool KSh 250,000 upfront, plus an annual fee based on your sales (at least KSh 120,000). And don’t even think about faking it – the fines are hefty!

The government is worried about a flood of cheap but shoddy phones flooding the market. These knock-offs are not only prone to exploding (figuratively, and maybe literally!), but they also leave a digital trail of insecurity. So, to help you avoid getting scammed, the government launched a nifty website where you can check if your phone is the real deal by typing in its unique ID number (the IMEI).
Things got a bit messy last year when the government tried to force everyone entering the country to declare their phone’s ID. Cue the public outcry! Privacy concerns erupted, and the High Court stepped in to put a temporary stop to this phone-snooping plan.
So, the battle against counterfeit electronics continues. Will the new license and the IMEI checker be enough to keep those dodgy devices at bay? Only time will tell.
